Course
Descriptions
Herbal &
Therapeutic Update: Clinical Pearls for the Physical Therapist
Friday, November 13, 2009, 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
by
Robert Page, PharmD, Associate
Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Physical Medicine, School of
Pharmacy, University of Colorado Denver, Aurora, Colo.,
accompanied
by Susan Paulsen, PharmD, Associate Dean for
Student Affairs, School of Pharmacy, Regis University, Denver, Colo.
Numerous prescription medications not indicated for movement disorders
can lead to problems affecting balance and blood pressure, especially
within an older population, which ultimately can lead to potentially
hazardous falls. Physical therapists need to be aware of the potential
medications and the risk factors associated with such adverse events.
This program will highlight specific medications that can affect
movement leading to falls, the pharmacological mechanisms associated
with these adverse events, potential patient specific risk factors, and
strategies to prevent falls if patients are taking any of these
medications.
Falls Prevention: From Research to Practice
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
by Anne
Shumway Cook, PT, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Department of
Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, Wash.
Falls represent a significant health risk in both geriatric and
neurologic populations. Considerable research has investigated optimal
approaches to assessing and managing risk in these vulnerable
populations. This presentation will discuss current research related to
falls prevention, and consider the clinical implications of this
research in managing risk for falls in both geriatric and neurologic
populations.
Pediatric
Sports Medicine
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
by Mark
Paterno, PT, MBA, Coordinator of Orthopedic and Sports
Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center, Division of
Occupational and Physical Therapy, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.
The face of
youth sports participation has evolved dramatically in recent decades.
Youth and adolescent participation in organized athletics has increased
over six fold in the last 30 years, resulting in over 3.5 million sports
related injuries in children between the age of 5 and 14. Additionally,
the concept of sports specialization at a young age has resulted in a
dichotomy of sports participation as very young athletes are self
selecting themselves into year round, single sports participation or
dropping out of sports if they fail to compete with their peers. This
has resulted in two large populations of children: those who suffer
from the perils of inactivity, such as obesity and those who become
injured due to overuse in a skeletally immature body. This course will
focus on describing this societal phenomenon in sports participation
today, as well as discuss the adverse effects on both populations. In
addition, strategies for prevention and management of overuse injuries
in this young population will be outlined.
Balance Rehabilitation:
Translating Research into Clinical Practice
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
by Anne
Shumway Cook, PT, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Department of
Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, Wash.
Balance is a critical part of independent function. Impaired balance is
a common problem in both geriatric and neurologic populations, and leads
to increased risk for falls, loss of functional independence and reduced
quality of life. This presentation reviews recent research examining the
neural basis for imbalance in older adults and those with neurologic
pathology and considers the clinical implications of this research to
evidence based balance rehabilitation.
ACL
Reconstruction Rehabilitation
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
by Mark
Paterno, PT, MBA, Coordinator of Orthopedic and Sports
Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center, Division of
Occupational and Physical Therapy, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Over 200,000
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures occur annually, in the United
States resulting in a health care expense of over 625 million dollars.
Extensive research has been dedicated in recent years to investigate
mechanisms of ACL injury, prevention strategies and optimal post
operative management. This course is designed to give an overview of
the full spectrum of management of ACL injuries. The session will
review the most recent literature related to mechanisms of ACL injury
and optimal strategies targeted to prevent injury. The focus of the
session will highlight post injury management from acute care after
reconstruction to return to sport decision making in this population.
Content will include options for surgical management and controversies
related to graft source, post operative rehabilitation, controversies
with return to sport decision making and unique considerations for the
skeletally immature athlete.
