Session Descriptions
"Conservative Management of Chronic Foot Disorders"
The purpose of this intermediate
level course is to discuss current management techniques for chronic
foot problems based on the best available evidence. The first session
will consist of lectures on the use of the Treatment Direction Test to
determine if foot orthoses are indicated in the management program as
well as a review of the current research on the effectiveness and
justification for the use of pre-fabricated foot orthoses. The second
session will focus on best-practice interventions for the management of
chronic heel pain and forefoot disorders, including metatarsalgia and
hallux limitus/rigidus.
Upon completion of this
course, participants will be able to:
-
Define the role of adhesive strapping as
a component of the Treatment Direction Test;
-
Describe the differences in
effectiveness between a balanced versus total-contact approach in
providing motion control;
-
State the justification and purpose of
using pre-molded foot orthoses as part of the management program;
-
Describe the current evidence to justify
the use of night splints, stretching regimes, and foot orthoses for
the management of chronic heel pain, and
-
Describe the use of an internal and
external metatarsal bar as an intervention for forefoot pain.
"Functional Manual Therapy & Kinesthetic Training
for the Lumbar Spine"
The
foundation of the Functional Manual Therapy approach is the evaluation
and intervention of the mechanical, neuromuscular and motor control
systems for the enhancement of function. This course will present a
comprehensive and integrated approach for the management of patients
with complex lumbar spinal problems. Participants will be instructed in
the use of three functional tests, the Vertical Compression, Elbow
Flexion, and Lumbar Protective Mechanism Tests, to assess the patient’s
core muscle responsiveness and strength and the correlation of this
response to the patient’s alignment. Through the tools of Kinesthetic
Comparative Training (motor control training), participants will be
trained to automatically assume and utilize more efficient postures and
movements, allowing for an automatic-not volitional contraction of the
core.
While facilitating
one’s lab partner to assume more efficient postures and movements, the
participant will be trained to identify soft tissue, articular, and
neurovascular mechanical dysfunctions which are limiting optimal
function. Once identified, the participant will be trained to utilize
Functional Mobilization, the combination of soft tissue, joint, and
neurovascular mobilization with active and high velocity movements. As
mobility is restored, PNF is utilized to restore proper neuromuscular
timing and efficiency of the associated neuromuscular system, with an
emphasis on the synergistic activation of the core and global muscle
groups. The Functional Manual Therapy program is completed with
neuromuscular training for appropriate initiation, strength and
endurance, including an extensive home program.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Define the
Functional Manual Therapy approach;
-
Identify and
perform the three functional tests;
-
Utilize
Kinesthetic Comparative Training (KCT) for motor control training;
-
Identify the
dysfunctional movement segment limiting efficient posture and
movement;
-
Develop an
understanding of the Functional Mobilization treatment progression;
-
Understand how
to utilize Functional Mobilization to enhance mobility, and
-
Develop an
individualized rehabilitation and home program.

Speakers
Tom McPoil, PT, PhD, ATC, FAPTA
Tom McPoil, PT, PhD, ATC, FAPTA, is a Regents Professor
of Physical Therapy and
Co-Director of the Gait Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona
University, Flagstaff,
Arizona. Dr. McPoil has specialized in the
evaluation and management of foot and ankle disorders since 1979. He has
authored more than 80 referred manuscripts and 60 published abstracts,
written five book chapters, and conducted over 180 workshops/lectures
on the subject of foot and ankle evaluation and conservative
treatment. Dr. McPoil has also presented over 90 research papers, both
nationally and internationally, on various topics related to foot and
ankle mechanics, evaluation, and management. In addition to seeing
private patients at the University, he serves as a consultant for lower
extremity disorders for the Department of Athletics. Dr. McPoil
currently serves as Vice President of the Orthopaedic Section, APTA and
previously served as the Chair of the Foot & Ankle Special Interest
Group from 1995 to 1997 and 1999 to 2001. His current research
activities include the development of a static lower extremity
measurement protocol that is both reliable and predictive of dynamic
movement.
Gregg Johnson, PT,
FFCFMT

Gregory (Gregg) S. Johnson PT, FFCFMT
graduated from the University of
Southern
California in 1972. He spent seven years at Kaiser Rehabilitation
Center in Vallejo,
CA, studying and
teaching PNF under Maggie Knott, PT. In
1976,Gregg
began developing
and teaching continuing education courses in Functional Manual
Therapy, which reflects
his extensive studies
in orthopedic
manual therapy. Those studies include most
physical therapy manual therapy approaches, osteopathic systems, and
alternative therapies. Together with
Vicky Johnson, he founded
the IPA in 1978 and developed the PNF I, PNF II, Functional Gait, BET,
FO I, FO II, and FM courses. The integrated principles and techniques of
these courses form the IPA Functional Manual Therapy approach. In
addition, Gregg combined his knowledge of the articular, neuromuscular
and soft tissue systems to develop the Functional Mobilization ™
treatment system. Gregg has authored and co-authored multiple chapters
and publications, and has lectured at many APTA, AAOMPT (keynote speaker
1999), and State conferences. He is actively involved in research
projects related to the validation of the Functional Manual Therapy
Approach. Gregg and Vicky owned and operated clinics in Marin County and
San Francisco and presently live in Steamboat Springs, CO where they
manage their practice Johnson and Johnson Physical Therapy. In addition
to teaching, they co-developed the Functional Manual Therapy
certification program in 1997. This same year, Gregg developed the
year-long Functional Manual Therapy Fellowship program. This program,
which is available for CFMT graduates, is certified through the APTA and
the AAOMPT. Mr. Johnson has also serves as adjunct faculty for the
University of St. Augustine, Touro College, Azusa Pacific University,
and Chatham College.
Vicky Saliba Johnson, PT,
FFCFMT
V icky
Saliba Johnson PT, FFCFMT
graduated in 1977 from
the Medical College
of Georgia. She completed the six month PNF training program at Kaiser
Rehabilitation Center in Vallejo, CA, under the direction of Maggie
Knott, PT. Her primary interest and study in orthopedic manual therapy
have been in movement reeducation and exercise prescription. Saliba
Johnson founded the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) with Gregg Johnson
in 1978 and began teaching PNF nationwide. In 1986 she developed and
began teaching Back Education and Training through the IPA. She has
co-authored several chapters; spoken at many APTA sponsored events and
lectured at the 1994 FOMT Convention. She has studied many manual
therapy approaches including Maitland, Paris, Grimsby, McKenzie, and
Rocabado. Her clinical practice focuses on motor control and
neuromuscular training. In addition to working with clinical patients,
Mrs. Johnson has done corporate Back Care Prevention programs. Saliba
Johnson is co-owner of Johnson and Johnson Physical Therapy in
Steamboat, CO. She previously was co-owner and co-director of
Preventative and Rehabilitative Physical Therapy, The Back Clinic and
Resource Center, and Marin Spine and Orthopedic Center in Marin, CA. In
addition to teaching, Saliba Johnson co-directs the APTA credentialed
Functional Manual Therapy Certification programs through the IPA.
