MORNING SESSION:

"The Future Is Health - Tools for Helping Patients Achieve More Than the Status Quo"
by Janet R. Bezner, PT, PhD, Deputy Executive Director, American Physical Therapy Association, Alexandria, Va.

Audience: PTs, PTAs and students.

Overview:
The number of people who practice healthy behaviors regularly is alarmingly low, leading to chronic diseases across the lifespan that have become a primary cause of death and disability in the U.S. Transitioning your approach and focus from “illness” to “wellness” can produce results that are significant and worthwhile. During this presentation, you’ll find out more about what health promotion and wellness are, how to develop a wellness approach in all practice settings and across the lifespan, and how you can incorporate health promotion and wellness into your practice when you return to work on Monday..

Upon completion, attendees will be able to:
•   Differentiate among the terms health, health promotion, and wellness;
   Appreciate the burden of chronic disease in the US;
   Identify and apply the health promotion and wellness screening/history taking aspects of patient examination;
   Understand how to achieve effective behavior change with patients/clients in physical therapist practice, and
   Recognize legal, liability, and documentation issues involved in providing health promotion and wellness services within the context of physical therapy.

Janet R. Bezner, PT, PhD received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and a PhD in health education from the University of Texas. Prior to joining APTA in May 2005 as the Senior Vice President for Education, she was Senior Vice-President for PeakCare, Inc., a healthcare technology firm, where she managed the development of a wellness and prevention software and video library aimed at employers to assist in decreasing health care costs associated with illness and injury at work. Janet spent seven years teaching physical therapy at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas and has practiced in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, home health, long term care and corporate wellness.  Janet served on the Board of Directors of the American Physical Therapy Association prior to joining staff and is a frequent speaker on health promotion and wellness, leadership, and strategic planning.  Janet is the Deputy Executive Director of the APTA.
