*Click here for a printable brochure & registration form (PDF) In the current health care environment, physical therapists are finding that, for many reasons, they may not always be adhering to the current regulations and requirements related to provision of services under the Medicare or other federal health programs. As clinics/facilities become aware that their coding, billing, or documentation may not meet requirements, it can produce a frustrating, alarming, and stress-inducing situation. The Office of the Inspector General has designed a Provider Self-Disclosure Protocol (SDP) which has been in effect since 1998, as a method to encourage the health care provider community to help ensure the integrity of the Federal health care programs by voluntarily disclosing self-discovered evidence of potential fraud. The SDP is intended to facilitate resolution of matters that potentially violate Federal criminal law, civil law, or administrative laws for which exclusion or civil monetary penalties are authorized. However, disclosures that are characterized as mere billing errors or overpayments are not appropriately addressed by the SDP, and when discovered, may be appropriate to submit to the claims processing entity, such as the Medicare contractor. It is important for physical therapists and facilities to understand when it is appropriate to initiate the SDP, or when other corrective action should be taken. Additionally, it is important to recognize those situations that increase the risk of an audit by third party payers or other agencies, and the steps that should be taken to minimize the risk for an audit. This audio conference will assist by providing a checklist of recommended steps to incorporate into your policy and procedure manual or practice operations to assist in ensuring adequate awareness of regulations or other requirements necessary for participation in Medicare or other third party health plans.
