21 Contrarian Truths of Physical Therapy
This opening session will set the tone for several lectures that
follow. Twenty-one principles or “truths” about the PT profession
will on first glance run counter to our common perceptions. Among
the topics to be covered are why our results are not dependent
solely on our clinical skills and why the trend towards measuring
patient satisfaction is worthless. Themes surrounding evidence-based
practice, marketing, and patient interventions are woven into this
session.
15 Critical Essentials for WOW! Customer Service in a Physical
Therapy Clinic
Participants will learn the other half of obtaining a great clinical
outcome: customer service. The health care world is universally
known to provide the worst in customer service and as physical
therapists we need to be the leaders in the transition to customer
centric. These principles were written exclusively for physical
therapists and are presented in a unique manner with lots of
audience participation. PTs generally do not learn customer service
skills in school and these principles can be readily implemented.
Marketing Quality in Physical Therapy: A Possibility or Pipedream?
Using examples outside of health care and a few within, this session
will expose the audience to analogous industries that faced
competitive marketplaces against seemingly unstoppable
competition. How did the competitors do? Did quality play a
role? This session encourages physical therapists to stay on the
high road by focusing on the integration of evidenced-based
practice, master clinicians, patient outcomes, and patient loyalty
within their practice.
Marketing and Branding in Physical Therapy: What does it mean and
is it our responsibility?
Yes, it is our responsibility. What does branding mean? What and how
can I market? This session will describe concepts about branding and
marketing specific to physical therapy. Techniques that can be
immediately implemented will be shared.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Larry Benz
is the founder
and President/CEO of Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team (KORT), with
65-plus private practice clinics in Kentucky, Florida, and Texas.

study. He serves on the American Board of Physical Therapy
Specialists, is a past member of the Panel on Practice for the APTA,
and was part of the task force that authored the Guide to
Physical Therapy Practice. He brings a unique perspective on
physical therapy as a businessman, entrepreneur, former Army PT and

electrophysiology. A graduate of the US Army-Baylor University
Master's program in Physical Therapy, Benz received his MBA from
Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business. He received his
DPT from MBHHP in Boston.
“A
Functional Approach to Geriatric Rehabilitation & Wellness”
by Ellen R.
Strunk, PT, MS, GCS
Physical Therapy Clinical Consultant / Director of Contract Home
Health
Restore Therapy
Birmingham, Ala.
This course will explore
evidence-based strategies for improving health and functional
capacity in older adults, including both the well and those with
common medical conditions. Specifically, this course will present
strategies for conducting a comprehensive examination of patients
with various rehabilitative problems, including systems review and
exercise prescription. Outcomes measures for objective determination of changes in functional
capacity will be discussed. The evidence supporting exercise
programs for conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis,
obesity, and impaired balance will be presented. Case studies and interactive
activities will allow participants the opportunity to design plans
of care for individuals with complex conditions, including congestive heart failure, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, and Alzheimer’s
disease. The issues of compliance and adherence to exercise as it
relates to the older adult population will be explored. The course
will also present information on how to document for appropriate reimbursement.
Objectives:
1)
Describe the fundamental concepts of effective exercise
prescription for older adults;
2)
Identify issues therapists need to consider during patient
assessment and patient treatment of the older adult;
3)
Identify and examine the functional assessment tools that
demonstrate efficacy for the older adult population;
4)
Develop strategies for incorporating appropriate
rehabilitative activities into practice and documentation, and
5)
Examine the barriers to exercise and the concept of compliance
versus adherence to exercise programs in the older adult population.
