members for the 2011-2012

Doctoral Opportunities for
Clinicians and Scholarships
(DOCS) program to fund the most
highly-qualified doctoral and
postdoctoral students preparing
for research careers, the
Foundation awards PODS II
Scholarships of up to $15,000 to
physical therapists or physical
therapist assistants who have
been formally admitted to post
professional doctoral candidacy.

APTA / Colorado Chapter is proud
to announce Jennifer
Hide, PT,
as recipient of the Emerging
Leader Award
which is presented annually by
the American Physical Therapy
Association. The purpose of this
award it to identify and honor
one physical therapist or
physical therapist assistant
“emerging leader” from each APTA
chapter or section. This person
must have demonstrated
extraordinary service early in
his or her physical therapy
career and made exceptional
overall accomplishments and
contributions to the APTA, the
component, and the physical
therapy profession to advance
APTA’s vision. To be eligible
for this award, the nominee must
be a current member of APTA for
at least 5 years and no more
than 10 years from formal
graduation. The nominee must
also have current or prior
service on one or more appointed
or elected groups at the
component or national level. One
“emerging leader” from each
chapter and section is
recognized annually with mention
in the October 2010 issue of
PT Magazine.

Ira Gorman, PT,
is the recipient
of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) 2010 Federal
Legislative Award. The award is given to an APTA member who
demonstrates outstanding leadership in federal legislative issues
and promotes initiatives that preserve, protect, and advance the
practice of physical therapy.
Gorman is assistant professor in
the School of Physical Therapy at Regis University in Denver. He is
a member of APTA’s Health Policy and Administration, Education,
Neurology, and Private Practice sections. Gorman has served as
Colorado Chapter Chief Delegate to APTA’s House of
Delegates (2006-2008) and as Chair on the Colorado Chapter Referral
for Profit Task Force. He has presented at numerous APTA
conferences. In 2005, Gorman received the Outstanding Physical
Therapist Award from APTA’s Colorado Chapter. The Chapter also
bestowed on him the 2004 Bob Doctor Service Award.
Gorman received this latest award
at APTA’s Federal Advocacy Forum, an annual educational event that
focuses on educating members of Congress about physical therapy
issues. Of the association’s 22 forums, Gorman has attended 9.
"Ira has been an active leader
and participant in physical therapy advocacy efforts for a number of
years," said APTA President R. Scott Ward, PT, PhD. "He has served
the association for many years and in many capacities creating
personal relationships with federal legislators. Ira also goes to
great lengths to include his students in the legislative process by
incorporating advocacy in his curriculum."
Gorman holds a Master of Science in Public Health
from the University of Colorado, Department of Preventive Medicine
and Biometrics, and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from
SUNY at Stony Brook, School of Allied Health Professions in New
York. Additionally he has a bachelor’s degree in biological science
from SUNY. (May 12, 2010)
