2010 Academic and Clinical Excellence Award for PTA Students  Presented to Dessa Warren, SPTA
(nomination letter written by Mary Chavez, PTA, MEd, PTA Program Chair, ACCE) Summarized for brevity; click here for complete letter.

This letter is being written in support of the nomination of Ms. Dessa Warren for the Student PTA ACE award from Colorado APTA. Ms. Warren has been a strong, active member within the PTA program at Pueblo Community College (PCC) from the beginning. She joined APTA as a student in her first semester of the program, which is unusual for our student population, since membership is not a requirement. She has encouraged her classmates to join APTA by bringing in several of the various materials she received for being a member.

Ms. Warren has been strong academically throughout her education in the PTA program, maintaining a 3.84 GPA, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Comments from classmates peer reviews state that she is very respectful, always willing to learn, intent on getting things right, a great study partner and professional in giving and receiving feedback from classmates and instructors.

Ms. Warren is a deserving candidate for this award. Her motivation and commitment will be contributing factors as a physical therapist assistant and to the profession of physical therapy. She will continue to be an advocate for her clients and the profession of physical therapy. I strongly encourage you to recognize her multifaceted strengths and award her with this recognition. Thank you for the opportunity to submit this letter of support for her nomination. Therefore without reservation I nominate Ms. Dessa Warren for the Student PTA ACE award.

Outstanding Promotion of Physical Therapy Award Presented to
Eric Avery, PT, DPT

The Chapter Outstanding Promotion of Physical Therapy award  recognizes exceptional physical therapists  for  their outstanding work in promoting PT during Physical Therapy Month. This year’s recipient, Dr. Eric Avery, has spear headed the Regis School of Physical Therapy Fun Run for the last seven years. While promoting health and wellness of all ages including many seniors, the fun run kicks off the celebration of physical therapy month for the local community. Over the seven years, the Fun Run has raised over ten thousand dollars for The Argyle senior community center that serves underprivileged seniors.

Each year, over 300 individuals from all ages participate in the Physical Therapy Fun Run; many of the participants are senior residents of The Argyle community who are escorted by DPT students for the length of the course they can participate in. By reaching out into the community, Eric recruits 2 to 3 corporate sponsors every year to fund the event. His passion for promoting PT, health and wellness is role modeled to future physical therapists as he mentors a group of 25 DPT students that assist him in promoting and coordinating the event.

Dr. Avery’s passion for promoting health and wellness for all populations and mentoring community engagement for physical therapy students exemplifies the APTA Vision 2020 as physical therapists strive to be community leaders in the area of health and wellness.

Bob Doctor Outstanding Service Award Presented to Jaimy Wahab, PT, DPT

After graduating from Regis University in 2002 with a masters in PT, today’s Bob Doctor award recipient immediately proceeded to earn her transitional DPT. She knew early on that she wanted to specialize in treating people with neurological disorders and started working with South Valley Physical Therapy, a local private practice well-known for its neuro niche.

An active member of the APTA, this physical therapist has served as Director at Large of the Colorado Chapter Board of Directors, has chaired the Bob Doctor Golf Tournament, and is currently Chair of the Fundraising Committee.  And she hasn’t missed a beat since the birth of her beautiful daughter, Melia.

A story from a colleague describes our award winner well …..    “We walk into the gym and we hear effusive “giggling!” We think there must be some lighthearted conversation going on. In truth, this physical therapist will be treating someone with a very serious neurological condition --- and making it fun!”

We admire you, Jaimy Wahab, for carrying your love of life and laughter with you throughout your busy life and for contributing greatly to the PT profession and our association.
