2010 Academic and Clinical Excellence Award for PTA Students  Presented to Dessa Warren, SPTA
(nomination letter written by Mary Chavez, PTA, MEd, PTA Program Chair, ACCE)

This letter is being written in support of the nomination of Ms. Dessa Warren for the Student PTA ACE award from Colorado APTA. Ms. Warren has been a strong, active member within the PTA program at Pueblo Community College (PCC) from the beginning. She joined APTA as a student in her first semester of the program, which is unusual for our student population, since membership is not a requirement. She has encouraged her classmates to join APTA by bringing in several of the various materials she received for being a member. She also has done several searches through APTA’s Hooked on Evidence to support classroom instruction. She attended Spring convention her first semester and has attended and assisted with running three different continuing education courses held at PCC, in which funds raised go towards the PTA SIG of Colorado and the PTA Club at PCC. Ms. Warren has served in a leadership role within the PTA club as Historian and in charge of running the PTA Club’s snack store, which raised over $100.00 a semester. As a Historian the scrapbook she has made of her classmates’ journey of becoming PTAs is awesome!  She also serves as a student representative on the PTA program Advisory board which meets three times a year, she has made each meeting and actively participates in the meetings. Ms. Warren actively participated in all club activities such as durable medical equipment donations to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoe Box drive, Thanksgiving baskets that were donated to needy Pueblo Community College students and collecting items for the APTA PT-PAC silent auction fundraiser.

Ms. Warren has been strong academically throughout her education in the PTA program, maintaining a 3.84 GPA, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She has spent many extra hours trying to grasp and hang onto every bit of knowledge that is given to her and motivated to search for new knowledge on her own. She is dependable, flexible and a good team player. Comments from classmates peer reviews state that she is very respectful, always willing to learn, intent on getting things right, a great study partner and professional in giving and receiving feedback from classmates and instructors.

Ms. Warren did well in her first clinical experience with her clinical instructor also stating that she is very motivated to learn, dependable, compassionate and professional with staff and patients.

Ms. Warren is a deserving candidate for this award. Her motivation and commitment will be contributing factors as a physical therapist assistant and to the profession of physical therapy. She will continue to be an advocate for her clients and the profession of physical therapy. I strongly encourage you to recognize her multifaceted strengths and award her with this recognition. Thank you for the opportunity to submit this letter of support for her nomination. Therefore without reservation I nominate Ms. Dessa Warren for the Student PTA ACE award.
