Colorado Chapter
Outstanding PT for 2006
–
Carol
Kishiyama, PT –
We have all
known this year’s Outstanding Physical Therapist for a long
time.
She
is a graduate of the University of Colorado with a BS in
Physical Therapy in 1964. She then went on to work as a physical
therapist at Mercy Hospital in Denver and then the Denver
Orthopedic Clinic. She has been an active member of APTA for her
entire career and even as she has recently retired, she held a
silent fund raiser at her home to continue her support. She has
been involved with the Bob Doctor golf tournament as the chair
of this event. She has served as the chair of the Colorado APTA
Ethics Committee and was a founding member of the PPSIG.
Her work
for the support of the most recent sunset review was
instrumental in raising not only funds necessary to get this
important legislation through, but she was also active in
getting other physical therapists involved in the process.
Without her efforts we may not have a license to practice in the
State of Colorado today. In order to promote this she brought in
speakers to advocate not only for private practice but for
physical therapy in general. Carol Kishiyama has been
a successful owner of the Colorado Athletic and Conditioning
Clinic and DIA Physical Therapy. She has pushed her staff to
become not only members of APTA, but to be active members. She
knows the importance of a strong association and has been a
vocal advocate.
Carol was one of founding
members of Colorado Physical Therapy Network, which has promoted the open
enrollment of members and has grown to become a key third party administrator
for physical therapy. She was also a founding member of The Alliance for
Physical Therapy, which has grown to 16 clinics and
provides a marketing arm for private practitioners. Carol claims to now be
retired but we shall see. I am sure she is still actively involved in some way
in physical therapy.
In light of her career as
an active physical therapist, her continuing support of the Association and
the profession of physical therapy, her ability to encourage other physical
therapists to join our association, and her vocal advocacy, Carol Kishiyama is
a deserving recipient of this year’s Colorado Chapter’s Outstanding Physical
Therapist Award.
Shown to
the right is Carol with last year's award recipient Ira Gorman,
PT, who made the presentation on behalf of APTA/CO on April 8,
2006.
