Physical Therapists will
face significant changes in how
Medicare Home Health defines and
delivers therapy services in the
near future. Audit scrutiny,
primarily focused on rehab care,
has already begun to identify
differences between covered and
non-covered physical and
occupational therapy in the
home. These changes illustrate
the programming modifications
required to achieve success
under the PPS model in the audit
era, and additional changes for
Physical Therapy are just over
the horizon. The Proposed PPS
Rule for 2011, just released for
public comment, describes
sweeping differences for
coverage of therapy in homecare.
Limits to covered care, new
re-evaluation requirements, and
mandates regarding programming
and documentation content will
alter the role and delivery of
all types of rehab care for Home
Health patients. Homecare
providers, and Physical
Therapists who serve homebound
clients, will need to update
their care programs to survive
these changes.
